Subject: dehorning mature cows

Picked up a couple cows that have horns. Seems to me that a head table and a back saw would be a bit hard on them, plus with fly season pretty much upon us I think beer can size head wounds might be best avoided.

I know some show cattle they numb em up, lop em off, shape the poll, and suture the wound shut. Seems like a hassle and not cheap, but has anyone done it and is this perhaps a viable option?

Someone told me horns could be banded, but I lean towards BS on that idea, but am certainly open to suggestion.

Does taking tips off do anything, or do they still use them as a weapon on other cows?
