Subject: c6500 for pulling stock trailer/hay trailer

I been considering purchasing a Chev or Gmc c 6500 to turn into a puller. I would put a plate on the back and put the big ball on it.
I have had my eye out for a mid 90's to early 00 model. So far most I have found are around 250k miles, with the cat diesel and either the 5 or 6 speed.
most of those are bringing from 4500 up to $7500. I like the disk brake rear axle.
I'm wondering if anyone here has done this, and how short a wheelbase works well?
I think I'd probably put a 10 foot flatbed on it. And position the trailer ball just ahead of the rear axle centerline.
I just cant make sense of putting a $45K+ pickup in front of these loads!. (or trying to stop them either)...
