Eastern WA | Starts off with something simple and you just end up going deeper and deeper into the abyss.
Went to help out with our all volunteer fire department doing some maintenance on the district tanker. Thought I would just change fluids, grease, and give it a quick look over. Dropped the oil in the engine and when I spun off the filter it was last changed in 200X and 15k miles ago. Oh well, it doesn’t used a whole lot. Then dropped the transmission oil and found a chunk of what I believe is a tolerance washer (13mm nut in the pic for size). So talked with commissioners and they were good with just putting a rebuilt transmission and some piece of mind back in it. I figured since I was in this far, better check out the clutch. Take it off and it doesn’t looks great but not horrible. But the pilot bearing is smoked. So I pull the flywheel off and of course the rear main is weeping. Just kept peeling back layer after layer to find more problems.
Also, had a wheel seal out on a drive axle that had been out for a looooong time. That’s a fun greasy mess to clean up.
Anyways, at least I’m working in a warm shop and hopefully this tanker won’t need to be serviced for another decade lol.
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
