Depends on the context of the situation. A young healthy animal that can be returned to its quality of life prior to an injury or illness is worth the cost. It’s borderline abuse to take extreme measures on elderly animal with a poor prognosis and poor QOL.
I used to work with a younger fellow who has two German Shepherds and they are his pride and joy. Bought a side of beef every year and actually prepared meals for them. Kept chickens in his back yard so he’d have eggs to feed them, claimed it helped their hair and skin health. Goes hiking with them all through the summer and they are trained extremely well.
See no problem with somebody taking care of their animals this way. It’s his time to spend.
