On our Brookston clay soils we drop 180,000 seeds per acre with a John Deere no-till drill . If finale stand is 125,000 or better will achieve good yields . We generally end up with around 140,000 plants per acre . This is on seed bean production . Our 10 year crop insurance average is 57 bu/acre . With this years yield at about 10 bu/acre better .
Maybe your clay ground is heavier but may be worth trying different seeding rates . Although few farmers here have been switching to planters .
