I think this is the biggest reason for the decline. There are not very many good jobs in rural areas. I'm located about 30 mins from you. Only around 1/4 of my graduating class still lives in the county. Most of us that are still here only had opportunities because of a family farm operation (myself included). The rest moved to where the jobs were.

Telework opened some doors for people to move back to rural areas, and 2-3 years post covid it looked like that was here to stay. But then most companies changed their minds and had people return to offices. Can't have that high priced office building sitting empty ya know.

Edit to add - 45 in my class in 2001, the largest of my 3 kid's classes has 25.
