I kinda understand why they do. IMO the gearboxes weren't designed for the spread load from the knives they put on them. Idk that I ever heard of widespread gearbox issues on the NH heads with the fluted rolls they used forever. Also why I think the Calmer rolls are better for that since theyre sharpened. On top of that the early slip clutches were kind of a poor design. They could lock up fairly easy. If you know to either keep them free or make it so you dont need them (good luck) youll probably get along fine. Beyond that i think theyre better designed and have a lot less wear parts than a 1000 series. Not a popular opinion on here though. I really like mine and dont miss the 1083 one bit and it was a good head too.
