Twenty years ago (has it been that long already?) every different C18 Tier 3 application, from Challengers, to mining equipment, marine, and everything in between, was developed with bespoke software (and hardware such as turbochargers) to govern performance for the respective needs of the particular machine installation. That specialization is cost prohibitive to develop and certify in today's emissions environment for a few hundred ag tractors a year and one reason we'll most likely never see another like it.

The performance characteristics of the ag-only C18 was intentional and special. All quietly done, without the bureaucracy's knowledge, by one engineer because he was tired of getting phone calls from the field that the previous generation Challenger engines did not have as good of performance as John Deere and Case IH tractors. Think he nailed that one.
