SCWisconsin | Yep, this is a tough one. Talked about many times over the years on here.
By now, I think I agree with the open sided shed, and for sure, CATS!
Unfortunately, (mostly fortunately) my wife and I winter in Florida. So cats are out of the question for me.
My mice eat Cab Fresh bags for breakfast! I have switched to a mint oil product. Expensive, but hey, wrecked equipment more so. Uncle something?...
Grandpa something?.. Can't remember, but seems to work better.
Good or bad, my equipment hibernates in a concrete floor shed.
So what do I do? (with relative success, but NOT 100%)! Remove all seed from planters, clean combine as good as possible. Store left over seed in sealed 55 gallon drums. Drain all shed system water, (would freeze and bust pipes anyway). But for this conversation, NO water for the critters. Have bait traps EVERYWHERE! Replenish them couple times per year. Even if not fully consumed.
Open all internal panel doors! Mice like dark hidden places. My Magnum Tractor's fuse panel etc. are behind seat, at floor level. I remove access door & place repellent in area. plus other places in cab. My combine, I leave fuse/relay panel door open during storage. Also instructor / passenger seat is 'hinged up'. Place repellent in there.
All machines, I open up battery box doors. Again, taking the dark nesting spot away. Bottom line, if there is a door (except cab entry doors of course) I leave them open during storage.
Lastly, when I am around farm (non Florida months), I place un-baited mouse spring traps in known strategic past problem areas. NEED to check every few days otherwise you will have a new 'rotting stink' problem. Yes, I have caught many mice without bait in trap.
Good Luck! | |
