Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | It’s interesting. We’re finding later planted corn gets past the heat of July and does much better. We risk a little getting into fall from an early freeze and harvest is a little later. Late May-early June planted corn comes up quick without stress.
Last year was a prime example. Late April to mid May planted corn got torched in mid July and yielded 50-75 bu. May 20-June 10th yielded 150-175.
Longer nights to give the plants a chance to revive. Plus days are shorter in August.
And, after July our weather pattern tends to get more monsoonal moisture flow from the southwest giving us a slightly better chance of moisture late summer to finish out the crop.
Being a drier climate we have a long window to plant and harvest. |
