I'm leaning to what the zoning says as the correct guideline. If its not agreeable to the citizens down the road after it was written, deal with it with whatever method is available to get it changed. I understand the need for variances, but tghey sometimes aren't granted as openly as they should be.

Doesn't matter what religion (for this discussion) is involved. Doesn't matter that a 1000 feet is a long way. Doesn't matter that the new owners business model was flawed. He should have known.

BUT- heres the part of the story that I think says a lot. The OP said the church wasn't consulted before hand to arrive at a potential compromise. Had that happened in the first place, theres a good chance that sides wouldn't have had to have been taken, there may very well have been some middle ground that would have satisfied everyone. Its going to be very hard to do that now.
