FERTILIZER INDUSTRY PROFITS UNDER SCRUTINY

A South Dakota farmer says recent reports of record profits in the fertilizer industry are concerning.

In a U.S. Senate Ag Committee hearing Tuesday, Trent Kubik, president of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association, says the news is disheartening as farmers face skyrocketing fertilizer prices.

“The recent earning reports indicate record profits for fertilizer companies.”  He says, “When my input price goes up, my profit margin shrinks. And I’ll be frank, it’s unclear to corn farmers in South Dakota how the opposite is possible for the fertilizer industry.”

Minnesota Democratic Senator Tina Smith says it’s nothing new as data shows the nine largest fertilizer companies made an estimated $84 billion in profits in 2021 & 2022, the last time prices spiked due to the war in Ukraine.

“In 2022, major fertilizer companies saw profits increase by somewhere between 100 and 200 percent,” she says.

Andy Green, senior advisor with Center Market Strategies, told the committee that industry consolidation affords fertilizer producers too much market control.

“Sustained increases in profits should also be cause for antitrust scrutiny, particularly in light of market shocks that are repeating today.”  He says, “It may be appropriate to reconsider those recent mergers that have helped form this highly concentrated sector.
