American Soybean Association does not receive checkoff funds. ASA is funded by member's dues and corporate sponsors to lobby on behalf of the soybean industry.
Your checkoff funds get split half to the United Soybean Board, and half to your state soybean commission (at least in Kansas, I assume other states are similar). They use the checkoff funds to fund production research and market development (exports, new uses, etc.). Legally, checkoff funds cannot be used for lobbying or other policy work.
Part of the problem here is the disconnect between ASA and the farmer. Same can be said for corn, beef ect. I’m not saying they are all perfect but I’ll bet 80% or more of the guys complaining don’t know about the two boards and how they are funded, let alone get involved and try to change or understand anything |
