When you pick up a clod from freshly worked ground and can crumble it. If it packs into a ball it's too wet. If it's too hard to crumble you worked it too wet earlier. This is on what many would call black (gray) soil from the Wisconsin Glacial Age. Just south of me (10 miles) guys on Illinois Glacial Age Soil can work ground to dry it out.

My thinking is that my planter has enough down pressure that if I can easily crush a clod, my gauge wheels will crush them as well. I do run row cleaners but they're set so that it appears they aren't doing anything. They're turning all the time. Their job is to brush aside anything that might affect planting depth.
