| The man was an actor. He showed up in army fatigues. The story was sold by the media as him taking a bit of time away from the front lines to beg for money before rushing back to again grab a gun to kill more bad guys. If he was ever even close to where people were dying he would have had massive protection details and certainly reduced the danger to the absolute minimum to obtain a photo shoot. But he was one heck of a good actor and a lot of people bought the narrative.
All brought to you by the media. He played the role, people ate it up. He dressed the part, people ate it up. He talked tough, people ate it up. He begged for money, people ate it up. If a person wanted to find someone to convincingly play a fake persona the first place to look would be within the professional acting community. Which is where he came from.
It was other people’s kids that were dying, not him or his own. He stayed quite safe in his mansion or in other countries where he was begging for money and got it. A lot of that money got funnelled into anything but that war. It’s exactly like you said, money laundering.
