I have been calving out 200 head a year for over 20 years. I have had a total of 2 broken legs in calves over the years. I have 160 calves so far this year and 4 broken legs. Nothing has really changed over the years. This is leaving me wondering what is going on. At this point I am thinking nutrition. Looking for Ideas. All brakes are in the ankle area and the vet is casting them,
Are the broken legged calves out of a specific age of cow (heifers possibly?)
Or, do you have a big mama old granny girl that thinks any new baby nearby is potentially hers and “harasses” the real mom by licking it and trying to steal it? In the harassment melay, I’ve seen fresh born calves get stepped on as the real mom circles to keep the harasser at bay |
