It happens on a pretty regular basis. I am really surprised you have not seen it before. Normally it is in February but March to April can also happen. Killing a lot of yearlings at this time of year which are older which tend to grade better. This increases amount of choice cattle at a time when demand for choice meat is lowest and demand for select cuts is highest. Also still in "crock pot" season which lends to roasts and tougher cuts and a lot of hamburger for casseroles. Not quite to grilling season which lends to choice steaks and higher cuts.

Some of these norms are not as prevalent as they used to but many still hold. Winter is still time that more families eat at home and summer is when the grills run hard. Always exceptions but these old rules do generally hold true on a grand scale.

I sold a lot of cattle grade and yield was always a kick in the pants selling 95% choice cattle with no premium because the choice select spread was negative.
