Mb | You arent going to expand with rented land without stepping on some toes somewhere, every acre more or less is currently being used by someone who doesnt want to lose it.
Muscling people out can work but in my experience land acquired that way leaves as soon as someone comes along with more muscle.
I ran an add in the local newspaper, and did get some land that way. I also kept an ear to the ground and any time I heard any rumors that someone wasnt happy with their tenant I went and introduced myself. Many people called in response to my add and their first question was "What do you pay" and I soon realized those were not likely to result in me working their land.
By and large it has more to do with luck and being in the right place at the right time.
edit: when land is rented to the highest bidder the only person who wins in the land owner
