Your example of mom with 10 siblings, 34 cousins and their 57 kids sounds like a small family to me. Try 140+ cousins + spouses and kids. Not all of them will come, but pretty easy to get over 400 at the reception.

Here the no kids are often the result of those of brides/mothers certain attitudes. We declined and figured out later we only got invited for the gifts because it got brought up months later that we never sent them a wedding gift.

Edit to add: i thought about it some more and most of the ones we get the no kids are from family. We find a babysitter for co-workers weddings since the kids dont know anyone. It is the family ones were they like spending time with their cousins and we enjoy catching up with our aunts/uncles/cousins. And yes I do toss in some cash with the gift when the kids get fed too.
