Subject: How to grow farm size ethically.

South West Michigan
I want to expand a little bit, but I don’t want to go about it the wrong way. I see a lot of guys go in and overbid ground just to take it from someone else, and that’s not who I want to be. I’m not interested in knocking on a neighbor’s landlord’s door trying to steal acres out from under them either. I’d rather build something where landowners come to me because they trust how I farm and how I treat people. I also don’t really like the idea of blasting online that I’m looking for ground. Nothing against it, just not my style. I’d rather let my work speak for itself. At the end of the day, I take a lot of pride in how I treat the ground. I’m not out here mining it for one big year, I’m thinking long term. Soil health, keeping things in good shape, doing things the right way so the farm is better off than when I got it. I know there are landowners out there who care about that just as much as the rent check. Maybe if you want to expand there’s no way around some level of cold calling, I don’t know. Just feels wrong going after ground from a guy who’s trying to make a living and isn’t some big BTO. I’d rather grow the right way, even if it takes longer. Any suggestions on how some farms got started in expanding would be appreciated.

Thank you

(Note, I have been farming a while (entire life) and would like to just shift it to full time.)
