IA/MN/WI | It actually drops it lower, 4.5 in my experience. Boost has a bunch of sulfuric acid in it(that's got to be healthy..) that's how they affect the pH, it certainly does reduce volatility.
Humic is an entirely different chemical reaction, it's ionically bonding ammonium to exchange sites. Is this weaker from a volatility perspective than using sulfuric acid to lower UAN pH? Sure. But Humic provides holding capacity for the N application long after the N has been incorporated into the soil with moisture. Of course there are other benefits associated with humic acid as well.
Most of my N is incorporated with my planter, or with a tool bar, so I'm not particularly concerned about how long the volatility protection from the humic lasts, this is obviously different for everyone. But if I was Y dropping, or doing prepant N and highly concerned about volatility then there are still significantly cheaper options to stabilize the N. I can use an NBPT for $1.50-2.50 per acre depending on UAN rates, or I could just buy a jug of sulfuric acid and dump it in the tank for less than a buck per acre.
The point is, Boost is completely overrated, and QLF has down a wonderful job telling the product story and marketing it with the warm and fuzzies of "we are just a humble feed additive company, not an evil row crop ag company". Just my opinion of course, and everyone can definitely disagree if they want. This is America after all, we're all entitled to an opinion. | |
