You can check the MS State and LSU Extension web sites for information on fire ant Control.

Taurus or any product that contains Fipronil will work. It may or may not be legal for fire ant control in TN.

You can broadcast Amdro in April and September for 2 or 3 years. This is a bait that should be broadcast at a very low rate when it is warm, sunny and the ants are out foraging around the mound. The workers carry the bait into the mound and feed it to the Queen. It will take about 4 weeks to see the results of this application.

You can pour gas or diesel on the mound and set it on fire. This may give you a warm fuzzy feeling and kill a few worker ants. The heat probably won't get deep enough into the mound to kill the Queen.

About 70 years back my brothers and I would take two shovels and swap a big shovel of dirt from mound "A" to mound "B". We would than watch the fire ants fight and kill each other. The next day you could see a lot of dead ants around the mounds. The next week you would see 4 or 5 new mounds around the old ones. You must kill the Queen to get rid of the ants!

They claim that about 100 years ago the Argentine Fire Ants came into the Southeast US on a ship form Argentina.
