My parents were first generation farmers.............and did it for the love of raising a family in the country, and getting out of the city life. They both graduated high school in San Diego, CA.

I had two brothers (I was the middle kid)..........and we all left home shortly after high school. I came back 10 years later after getting married and having two kids. I was the only sibling who caught the farming bug.

My parents were excellent at instilling the independence gene in me. Within 2 years of coming back I was able to buy our first bit of land with a home on it 5 miles from where I grew up. That initial purchase was double the size of my folks farm. Four years later my wife and I tripled our farm size. My folks were thrilled through it all. 6 years later my Dad passed away in a tractor roll over accident. That was 21 years ago and I was 38 years old at the time...........and although I was mentally crushed.........the path my folks had help set me on led to our farm not financially suffering in the slightest due to Dad's early death.

So, even though I'm the only farming sibling in my parents family...........inheritance is basically no concern. I'm pretty certain that was brilliant by design on their part. My two brothers have both had very successful careers. In fact..........my younger brother is probably the wealthiest of us all. Both of my brothers stand to inherit a portion of my parent's estate. It actually will be more than my share. But I already got to reap the reward of my parents putting me in the position to expand to a farm level they never achieved. Truth be told, they never wanted to farm big anyway. However, they got exactly what they wanted when it comes to a lasting family legacy.
