There are a couple farms in my area that have 'lift pumps'. From what I gather, in order to get the tile to work properly the outlet would sit below the drainage ditch. Therefore, they dig a pit for the outlet, put in a pump and eject the water to the ditch.

Is this the same set-up or something completely different?

Same setup you are talking about ---this one had a VFD pump AND best as I can remember ---pretty big underground storage
Underground storage usually multiple 48" N 12 sticks --48" pipe 20' long holds about 2000 gal
Hardest on pumps is cycling on and off SO want the pump to pump slow when water rising slowly fast when it needs to
Nice to have everything set so pump max cycles 2 times an hour
We have a couple fields one 80 acres ---all water pumped (8-10' levy around the field) have a 40 HP pump with a float and a "lagoon" where tile dumps into
Other a smaller lagoon 35 acres with a 10 HP pump
We cured our cycling with timers set so pumps wait 20 min before they will kick in again then pump till the float tips down

We know way too much about pumping water either Dewatering or irrigating -----
Some times learned the hard way
