hey Reality, I lived through the 1998, 8 cent hog days and it broke a lot of stout stubborn Norwegian and Germans. those wanting to stay in the hog business signed up with the integrators and they did quite well (if you are going to get into a pyramid scheme, better get in early) . i`m a young boomer or old X`er but i`ve noticed each generation is more open to sign up for security in exchange for their independence. when corn and beans have their 8 cent hog day that could be the tipping point. in reference it took 20 cents to feed those 8 cent hogs not counting light bulbs in the barn.

Survived the '80's and '98 hog down turn..Just me ,but never had any desire to feed someone else's pigs for a pittance.
Son raises hogs now but grandson's have no interest so expect he will be last generation . Minimum $20k land & machinery costs are not going to let the smaller farms grow much...Idk today even what a smaller farm is,maybe 1,000 acres. Now 1/2 that much land paid for with 0 debt will let you make a decent living, not new machinery ,but better life than working out
