I think Severson`s take on the more consolidated farms is they can justify a full time agronomist that isn`t also the one who also sells you fertilizer. they can have a full time marketer on staff who has 100`s of thousand bushels of supply for the buyer, ECT. all this running up land rent just to "control the acres" and other emotions wouldn`t be in their algorithm on whether they should take on a new parcel of land or not.

in my Operation, i`m the one making marketing decisions, agronomy decisions and also wrenching on my skid loader... the term "Jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind. :-) but in my defense, I don`t have the volume of production to "do things right".

Most smaller farms around here have some sort of side business going as well as the farm to help pay the bills and those are probably more hardy than some big guys around here who just farm.
I’m a small time operation also. But one thing a small guy has going for him is if he gets in a pickle he can go to town get a job to help pay for something abig guy gets in trouble he’s not going to town and find a job paying a half a million or whatever he’s needing to pay his bills.
