Hard work, good management and, most importantly, having the least amount of investment in equipment per acre farmed along with doing the wrenching yourself goes a long way toward profitability.

Through the years good times meant a lot of new paint, then when prices go down there is no going back to operating the way you used to. For instance, many farmers investment in trucks and hopper bottoms way higher than before high crop prices years ago.
Hard to go back once you have tasted the good life.
