Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | We are in the process of changing the oil in the hubs of my 8310R with ILS (think the regular fronts are the same). I notice the chart calls for 1 gallon GL-5 for each hub.
When I did a search of GLS-5 some synthetic equivalents come up also. Any reason to go with synthetic or just stick with Deere's GL 5?
This tractor has front duals. Since it's an early one, this requires removing each outer dual. I believe the oil can be changed without removing the outer dual on the newer models as Deere changed the casting somewhat to provide an access path to the drain plug.
My Great Nephew jacked up a side a bit and removed the outer wheel and spacer assembly as a unit. It balanced surprisingly well so he could roll it out of the way. He then removed the cast base piece from the outside of each inner wheel. The drain plug was then completely exposed. Each front wheel was then held in place with two bolts. The oil has been draining overnight in my heated shop. It should be easy enough to rotate the hub so the drain plug is on top and refill with a goose neck funnel. The used oil looked fine.
That is in contrast to what the local Tech found in our old 8310. When he took the right front apart (no duals but lots of hours) he found total destruction which will require lots of new parts.
