None of this will happen. Do you want the big city’s to be like they were in the early 80s as far as pollution goes? City’s are more populated than they were then so more smog. I know everyone on this site only thinks about themselves but it’s the reality of it. I know I don’t mind cleaner air in the shop when I have equipment running. Yeah def can be a pain but we have been running def stuff since 12 and it hasn’t really been that bad.

Answer me this:

What percentage of vehicles in said cities were:

Diesel?

Gasoline?

Gasahol?

Propane?

Today what percentage of vehicles in cites are:

Diesel?

Gasoline?

Gasahol?

Propane?

------

Diesel vehicles in the 1980s were a few very poorly received car models that basically didn't sell anything and medium and heavy duty trucks.

Def didn't solve your smog issue. DPF didn't either. Any diesel emissions issue didn't.

Catalytic converters, smog pumps, and ignition timing on Gasoline vehicles solved the smog issues.

If you are going to fear monger, at least give it some thought.

If you are running def equipment in the shop and like it better than non def your sinus system is completely shot. Def exhaust stinks, in more ways than one.

What about the 1000s and 1000s of buses and delivery trucks running up and down the streets in the big city’s. One thing I noticed when I was in New York City after 2012 all the buses were now using def and when you were walking the sidewalks they exhaust pipe wasn’t blowing black smoke in your face when they were pulling out on every street corner. Def systems were cleaner. It’s done more than you think. Don’t kid yourself. Go in your shop and fire up the 4430 and then see how long you last in there with the doors shut before your eyes are burning and can’t hardly see across the shop. Then go start the new tractor up with def and run that and see which one you would rather be in. If you can’t answer that then you haven’t been around newer equipment then. I do it all day long. I know which one I will choose.

Have you ever tried a wonderful website called Google?

Do you know why those busses weren't "belching black smoke"?

First, DPFs, not DEF, takes care of the smoke. CNH and some Agco equipment do no have DPFs only DEF and they still smoke occasionally.

Second, when you visited over half the bus fleet was either hybrid, electric at low speed, full electric, or LNG or LPG. The MTA in the 2000s purchased busses powered by the 5.9 or DT466, both rather clean burning engines, even in their first iterations, and after that began to purchase turbine powered busses.

Third the 1980s busses were basically all Detroit two strokes. A lot of delivery vehicles were as well, if they weren't still gasoline powered. Basically any real smokey engine from the 1980s was forced out by 1980s emissions requirements. It is why GM sold Detroit.

So when you visited, there wasn't any* DEF busses in service. Only early 2000s diesel, electric, turbine, or some combination of them.

I don't have a 4430, with an engine known for being smokey. I can fire up a tractor with an IH DT436 or DT466 but they are known for being pretty clean burning. That may take a while. The one thing we have that takes DEF clears the building very quickly, it seriously bothers my sinues, throat and lungs, with the burnt Urea. It chases out the service crew from the dealer as well.
