 NE ND | In my area you can figure at least $.25 gain over harvest price, and maybe up to $.50-$75 some years, plus efficiency of not waiting in line during harvest.
Now if you’re talking about “upgrading” storage you already have, that’s a whole different story as you already should be able to capture carry and basis gains, all you’re buying is convenience. But harvest efficiency is still a big deal.
We are in the middle of a multi year project, adding some storage but mostly getting rid of rented storage and small <5k bushel bins and building larger ones so we don’t have to move the auger every hour, or have 5-7 storage sites scattered across the county.
Local 4 pit elevator during corn harvest this year was always a 30+ minute wait (could be hours). We wouldn’t have finished before the snow flew had we not had our own storage.
