Why do so many people say to stay far away from annuities?


Because of internal cost(s) especially if you are using variable ones and rate of return and/or taxation.
Ive never in 47 years seen a fixed annuity that any internal costs, or fees of any sort associated with it, or upfront sales charge. And fee based advisors hate them because our money is on guaranteed autopilot, hard to justify charging an ongoing management fee for something so simple and straightforward. As a matter of fact they may even be prohibited from selling them, because they charge fees.
