If you are in a rewards program or have an airline credit card, you might not have to pay to have your luggage checked, otherwise it about $100 per trip ($50 each way). You can take a carry on bag for the overhead compartment and a small personal bag - like a purse or a backpack that you stuff under the seats. When traveling, I always assume that a checked bag is not going to make it if there is a plane change, and plan accordingly. They get delayed at the layover, going to the wrong plane, or by not having time to get stuff out of the 1st and into the 2nd plane before it takes off. I try to get everything in the carry on, and if that is not possible, then I put all the stuff that I don't want to freeze in a backpack. If I have checked bag is for things that I don't need in at least the next three days. If they offer to Check the bag at the boarding counter, they put those on the plane right before it leaves and takes them off right when they get back. I'll do that so that it is more likely there will be room in the overheads for the backpack.
