I have been tempted to do that several times. Then decided getting the cash back from the ones we have and buying the plane tickets with that might be just as good. I've never really tried to figure it out. I know of several friends that use the airline cards.
I would probably do it if we flew a single line all the time. But we are cheapskates and just go with the cheapest tickets usually.
We get several thousand dollars a year back from our current three main cards.
Booking tickets with miles vs cash has many other advantages other than just using the “free” miles.
Much more flexibility and much easier/cheaper to make changes if desired or necessary.
