I'm a small farmer, but arguably, one of the best ways to make American ag efficient and profitable (not ethical or good for the average person, just competitive), is to cut out the little guys. Get some publicly traded grain operations so you can really be cutthroat, eventually it all goes to publicly traded companies. Then they get greedy and merge with eachother, get down to about 3 crop farming companies in the US. Then, they can get even more greedy and vertically integrate into the seed genetics companies, ethanol production companies, etc. And then at that point, they can lobby so much that they are guaranteed a profit. :D And to be honest, I don't know how much I care if it happens at this point. I've seen how people treat small/beginning farmers, even family. The $ is already king to rich retired farmers renting out ground, it goes either to the highest bidder, or their buddies. And their buddies have a fair chance of having inherited ground to where I couldn't compete with them if I wanted to. So, why do I care if a farmer has it, or a large corporation, neither care about new generations farming. :D The real kicker is, I've actually come to the realization I'm glad I didn't get more ground to rent, it would just stress me out more.
