Ive heard those Ww 2 stories also and they are true. In almost every farming area there were guys that didn't have to go or reaped the benefits of the post war.
But no way on the green earth did wealth increase then (even with inflation) like it has in the last 20 years.
Here's how it played out in this area:
Many guys bot land (post war) for unpaid taxes and paid for it in 1 year.

BUT:
They only did it on 2 or 3 quarters because:
They weren't greedy.
They still remembered their dads struggling through the 30s.
Every single 1 of those guys here (now deceased) tell of how many MORE quarters they cd have bought but didn't.
Fast forward to the good years. Many guys went for the gusto and bought and leveraged and borrowed to the Max. It cash flowed, the land inflated 20 times and today they are multi multi millionaires. Not everyone of course. But many did. At least here, but it happened all across the Farm Belt.
