south dakota | 40 is alot to sell all at once if dont already have a established locker market. Call the pipestone locker assuming you are not too far away since you mentioned the auction there they are looking for pigs from time to time. For a locker hog i get $250-300 for the pig depending on how far the locker and how many im taking there at once. Any less and not worth the time and effort and dealing with peoples demands. If selling to someone you have no history with get payment before pig is delivered!! Early on learned that the hard way with people that then did not pay. No matter what with just a small group and a "Project" I doubt you are going to get all your cost covered but it will be a great learning experience.
If want to sell to individuals you should first call some of the lockers you are willing to take a pig to and see what their schedual is for taking a hog and see if it aligns with the weight of your pigs and when you need them to be gone. You may find that you can not get a hog in for a couple months. Assuming there is room at the lockers i would then for experience sake have your son start out knocking on neighbors doors to see if could sell them a pig. Once thoes doors are knocked on go to town and start knocking on doors, your sons age will be a advantage to selling. Also will want to consider selling halves as well possibly marked up $10-$20 more then if it was a whole pig. Good luck!
