What do you recommend to protect the foam patch on this mineral feeder, if anything?

This Pride of the Farm mineral feeder has served us well. The cover is still in its pasture location. There are many trees there and over one summer some small animal thought she could make a nice home inside. So she chewed an opening which became a U shape in both the interior and exterior wall.

For several years the opening was filled with a rolled mineral sack. The the central staff for the cover broke out of the plastic. So time for some restoration. The staff was replaced with a stainless steel bolt. A used baler bearing fit over the nut. The idea is to allow the nut to stay tightened while the cover spins. The u shaped opening has been filled with canned urethane foam.
