Vauxhall Alberta Canada | It would be very dependent on the productivity of your land. My hay land is not suitable for corn. I would say that most of it wouldn't give me enough yield to pay for the seed. Some years there isn't enough to be worth cutting for hay so the cows graze it over the fall /winter/spring. Now my good land would be more or less as you are describing but I always seem to get enough feed together that I don't have to take good land out of cash crops to feed my cows. 100% agree that corn silage is a better feed but I know it's not cheaper in my situation. If I didn't have land not suitable for crop production I wouldn't have cows. As far as waste when feeding hay we use a bale processor and feed on the ground. It's usually frozen and have very little waste in comparison to bale rings. If the cows don't clean it up they don't get as much the next day. | |
