Ft. Ripley MN | Roughly $275/acre to go from tillage to in the pile going off of average Iowa rates(put local rent in). You will have to add in the feeding costs in as well.
The no till acres are close to the same as they had less passes but one extra spray pass and that’s more expensive then my typical post pass.
Have had yields anywhere from 10-25 ton.. very weather dependent. Average is that 15-17 tons to an acre. You won’t buy hay for that… will maybe this year but that’s mostly fill and you are losing the energy.
Big thing I like is the amount of feed pulled off of a few acres. Do feed probably a heavier silage ration compared to most but I’m guessing I use 40% of the hay now compared to an all hay system… that does add up.
Seeding hay especially alfalfa is a similar system to growing corn. Don’t get me wrong I look at all the iron in the yard and I question if it’s the right way… but with feeding the calves out I think that’s more advantageous to having silage/tmr. Depending on what gets put up for feed I can tailer feed rations to meet the demands of the cattle. Grinding poor hay/straw/ by products make a difference in making silage and high quality hay more affordable.
Now in saying this… new paint is cool but pricey. I can understand having a nice line of hay tools. Your tractors on the other hand… those depreciated old gals do the same job as the newer ones. Just my opinion and half the time I’m wrong anyways lol | |
