Probably going to get flamed for this, and possibly rightly so. Everyone preaches corn silage is the best cheap feed for beef cattle. Like it just magically appears in front of the cow. Spring tillage, or a no-till planter, seed, fertilizer, herbicide passes... doesn't it take a boatload of horsepower (diesel) and wear parts to run a chopper? Pulling silage wagons or driving trucks around. Blow it up a pipe or rent or own a bagger. Price of bag. Then scoop it out with a machine and dump it in another machine pulled by more horsepower and then it appears in front of the cow.

Please understand, I'm not bashing silage growers/users. It's just that from my idiot outside-looking-in perspective, it seems to be a very iron/labor/money-intensive operation to make "cheap" feed. Cheap compared to what? Alfalfa cubes from TSC?

Maybe I'm just jealous of silage growers, because it does look like fun and I could darn near eat a bowl of steamy, warm fermented silage on a cold day, myself.

No, I can't tell you our exact costs to feed our cows, and this isn't a dick-measuring contest, just wondering is all.
