| I had the same situation occur to me this fall.i am younger than you are (65). A relative approached me asking if I was interested in purchasing the 160 next to me that once belonged to my great grandfather who also owned the farm I live on, coming up on 150 years family ownership next year. The price was reasonable but the farm has not been taken care of like mine and needs extensive tile drainage as well as some waterway reshaping. It didn’t take long for me to come to the conclusion I am better off leaving that amount of money in the market where I’m cleaning up and then putting it into farmland with maybe a 3% return plus maybe an annual 3-5% average increase in land values over time. | |
