Sitting here disking cornstalks with the sunflower disk on my corn plot looking at the differences in how well one variety works down vs the other and had a thought. Does anyone pick varieties in part by how well the work down in the fall and spring? A hybrid that is really trashy and leaves a lot of residue to plant into next year could very well affect the yield of the next crop due to issues at planting like hair pinning or poor emergence due to heavy residue. What about insects or disease hiding out in residue for the next year? Seems like a guy could take a couple bushel hit on a hybrid if it works up good so that the next crop can excel in its growing season and be money ahead. Maybe not just wondering if tillage and residue issues are part of how you choose seed choices year in and out. Obviously not as important for no tillers but there is some value to a corn stack that goes away quickly even for no tillers. Thoughts? Entertain me with ideas
