Well I learned something from this thread. I had never really thought about shear strength being that different between deck screws and construction screws. I probably use deck screws way too much for miscellaneous repairs. However I usually overdo stuff by at least two or three times what is needed because I know my knowledge is limited in a lot of areas. Back in the days of doing major construction of sheds we always got the right stuff. 

It is just that I always have multiple lengths of deck screws always on hand and impact drivers so I probably use them more than I should for repairs.

At 71 still don't have it all figured out. Wonder if I will ever make it?
