We had 100 mph wind at end of June. Lots of building damaged in the area. I was lucky, no major structural damage. But my 40 year old shed was very, very close to having major issues. So I decided to do a bunch of bracing to make the support of the trusses more like a modern, heavier built pole barn..

I’ve been working up in between the trusses in my older pole barn adding “X” and angle bracing between the 10’ spaced trusses. I’ve used lots of #10 3” and 4” screws. I probably put in many extra screws than if I would have been using nails. But where my mind says it needs more shear strength and holding , I splurge and put in the expensive 1/4” shank coarse threaded #30 torx headed heavy construction screws - more like a modern lag-bolt.

I think a 16 d nail would have more shear than a hardened #10 screw. Holding strength? I don’t know. But this cheap white wood is crap compared to the 40 year old trusses I’m bracing between. I put in 2x6 where a quality 2x4 should be good. But I’m just an amateur…..
