NW IL | This is why a large percentage of US fruit and vegetables are imported.
They can grow it cheaper in other countries and companies here only pay as much as it costs to import.
Same with organic grain markets. My soybean price is set based on what the local organic feed mill can import beans for. Why pay up when they can get it cheaper other places?
Tariffs on imported food would be awesome for US production, but you find any politician advocating for more expensive food.
On a different note. There are starting to be some "you-pick" vegetable farms near big cites. Like a market garden except they don't take it to the farmer's market, the people come and pick it themselves. Apparently they are doing well. | |
