I have had all of the above. Cows will eat a lot of barley, oat, rye, and corn stover. Not so much wheat. You don't want your cows to eat canola straw, it is very sharp and I have been told that it can do internal damage to cows. Rye straw goes a long ways but it is tougher to get through the bale processor than any of the others in my experience. I had some rye that I combined a few years ago and cut it about 18-24 inches high. The windrow was so big we had to go over the field with the land roller because we couldn't get it to go under the baling tractor. We got over 10 6×5 big round bales per acre out of it. The straw had to lay for over a week with no rain before it was dry enough to put up.
