southern MN | Sickle mower can cut 2 rows at a time, drive slow. Gives you the whole plant with ears. Disc mower might work but i’d think it would bend the corn through and mess up the ears. Brush hog makes a mulch with wasted ears multched up.
Round baler was good at following the sickle mower on stunted dry barren corn on the sand hill. It worked but not as well on good healthy green corn - if you and the kids are opposed to picking up the stalks manually. Keep the green bales small, feed right away, send the kids to pick up the ears that stay on the ground. Don’t try to rake it makes a mess, bale the right direction to feed the baler right.
If you want to store the corn for later feeding, I’m out. Sounds like a good way to supplement now day to day.
The corn knife and hay rack wasn’t that bad at all, we would get a lot more acres than you mention.
