So, go to a soils page and look up "Mexico Silt loam". It's basically 0-8" of topsoil, then it's various flavors of clay all the way to fire clay and then bedrock. Sometimes there will be a shale seam in there somewhere, just to screw up a pond dam. Under the shale is more clay. Creek bottom soils like Belknap are basically clay on top of sand. There are some better soils up in the Macon, Shelbyville area that are deeper, but they're 12-16" on top of multiple feet of clay.

UNO just doesnt get it..Not all soils are created equal..My area could get 12 inches of rain in July..However,in just the first 10-14 days of August that 12 inches could all be gone if its in the mid-upper 90's with wind..Since Aug 1st I've had 3 inches of rain and we are very dry..Its taken (11) rains to get those 3 inches and quite a few have had lots less rain than me....Theres no rain in sight for the next 14 days and this coming Friday and Saturday it will be 95 degrees.

In my area theres some early planted beans that are 3 ft tall..They could make in the 20's?Then,theres late planted early beans plus double crop beans 10-18" tall that were planted as late as mid July..They may make next to nothing??This will be the 4th year in a row of poor beans...2 of the last 4 corn crops have been a near failure..If it wasnt for crop insurance there would be some farm sales.

This year it seems like parts of Kansas (especially southern) has gotten all of the good July and August rains..Over night and this morning a fair sized area west of Salina has had as much as 8 inches of rain...It has just sat there and wont move....Edit-At 1 PM now up to 12 inches of rain north of Barnard,Kansas according to RainDrop..
