phatcow, agree with you, most of you guys don't know anything about fixing a pond. Cutting thru a dike to drain it, is about the worst thing you can do. Takes mega work to fix the dike, have to cut back, notch into existing dam, and probably don't have good clay to repair. Don't know how big it is or how much water you are holding back, but it could do more that just leak a little, it could blow out big time.
We have repaired may ponds that leaked in the past. Most of them were not built correctly, didn't dig test holes to see if the soil was good for a pond to hold water. Building pond is not as easy as some think it is. Need equipment to do it, more than a dozer to push dirt. Clay needs to be packed with a sheepsfoot roller, rubber tire pan does good too.
With the cost of equipment, fuel, not that many ponds are going in now. Some of the subdivisions are forced to build them for water retention from streets. Not many farmers are doing it for recreation, just too expensive.
