IL | Yes, we have/had rye on every acre . This year is tge first year go have every acre covered at once, as before, we had a reason for tillage ….usually tiling, or just leveling a field.
We are 100% pattern tiled now.
Ground going to corn gas 50# of crye spread with fertilizer in oct/nov. Then have fall AA strips done
They may or may not get freshened, depends on the farm
Ground going to beans gets the same crye treatment.
When I first started with covers several years ago I would let it go to May 10 or so and notill beans with a Kinze rearfold planter ( have a 2600 now )
I do not have any auto steer, so that wasn't really fun… trying to see old stalk rows . But I survived
I went through a couple challenging harvests of beans with heavy rye straw, when it got damp, so I starting moving my planting date up.
Then ran into slugs and damp seed trench slots … which led me to making strips this spring
I’ll try to make them earlier or in the fall after this
This all started from switching to striptill 18 yrs ago
My short story
